No more Mr. Nice Santorum

Noticed while strolling through a local Whiskey Bar:

I mean, you have people who don’t heed those warnings and then put people at risk as a result of not heeding those warnings. There may be a need to look at tougher penalties on those who decide to ride it out and understand that there are consequences to not leaving.

That’s my Senator, Rick Santorum, calling for “tougher penalties” on the people of New Orleans for putting (other) people at risk (as Billmon asks:  “Tougher than being drowned in a toxic cesspool???").  Perhaps he was drawing on John Derbyshire’s recent scholarly finding that black people tend to possess poorer native judgment than members of better-educated groups.

And remember, folks, Santorum isn’t just the Senate’s leading authority on man-on-dog sex.  He’s also a distinctly white, upscale version of Welfare Queen:

Penn Hills School District records show bills paid with local taxpayers’ money for U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum’s children to attend a cyber charter school total more than $100,000.

Since the 2001-2002 school year, at least three Santorum children have been attending a cyber charter school.

This year, the school district has to pay $38,000 for Elizabeth, 13, Richard, 11, Daniel, 9, Sarah, 6, and Peter Santorum, 5, to attend Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, which is based in Beaver County.

State law requires local school districts to pay the tuition of charter school students who live in the school district.

Santorum owns a home on Stephens Lane in Penn Hills, but he, his wife and six children live in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Herndon, Va. . . .

The only way for Santorum to not pay for his children’s private education is enrolling them in Penn Hills.

This humble blog believes we need tougher penalties on people who raid the public till to pay for their children’s private (fundamentalist) educations, and who then turn around and complain that drowning and starving hurricane victims should be charged with something like insurance fraud or reckless endangerment of others.

People of Pennsylvania:  please rid our fair Commonwealth of this looter, this crazed mullah, this ghoul.

  1. Wow, that just leaves me speechless.  I live in Oklahoma and I frequently say I have the two absolute worst Senators “representing” me, but I think they just got promoted to second- and third-worst.

  2. My review of videos of the senator have left me but one medical conclusion: He has no soul.

I’m not a real doctor but I played one in 2nd grade.

  3. AS a New Yorker, who for 18 years was mis-represented by Al D’Amato, my heart bleeds for Pennsylvania suffering for the idiot looter dog lover, Little Ricky.  States like New York and Pennsylvania are not supposed to have these stupid hack Republicans.  They are supposed to be in states like Oklahoma and even they can do better.  Getting rid of Little Ricky next year will be a sign that the world is going back on it’s axis and wrong will not be right and Fox news will be discontinued for lack of viewers.

  4. I never understood this move.  Aren’t there a lot of upscale lobbyist types in Herndon?  What was wrong with the public schools there?

Posted by  on  09/06  at  11:59 PM
  5. Santorum apparently believes that mothers who work endanger the welfare of their children; as a single working mother (and therefore on his express line to hell), I think that he avoids the public school systems because the malignant offspring of women with jobs might warp the fragile little minds of his innocent babes. Here’s hoping at least one of those tykes—male or female—turns into a leather-clad, metal-loving Kos-posting atheist biker bitch ASAP ... he or she will be the lucky one.

  6. I thought the best detail of the Senator’s benefit fraud was that the house in PA he claimed as his “primary residence” was in fact rented to a couple (who didn’t appear to be married) for a little extra income.

  7. Here’s a thought: we got at least three more years of this unless they just destroy the country/planet entirely before time runs out.

  8. He didn’t steal from the public till. He found it. Check the complexion.

  9. I thought Santorum was Catholic (albeit an arch-conservative, making-deals-with-evangelical-devils kind of Catholic).  What’s wrong with Catholic schools if he wants his kids to have relgious education?  Oh wait, I know—because the Catholic schools only teach religion in religion class, not in, say, science class.  And now they let girls be altar servers.  The horror!

Well, whatever he is, he’s also smug, incompetent, heartless, and evil.

  10. alwsdad:

Hey, fellow Okie!  Nice to “see” you.

But, wait, what’s this treason you’re spouting about Messrs. Inhofe and Coburn?  Don’t you know they represent Oklahoma values?

(Actually, they do - which is the scary thing.)

  11. It is so difficult to take Santorum seriously—he’s like a really dumb Dan Quayle—but in this political climate you must. He makes visible something deep, violent, racist, and fearful in the American psyche. If you have ever seen him “debating” on the Senate floor, you know his most persistent tactic and that is to threaten opposing Senators. This is what talk radio looks like when it infiltrates Congress.  The bully acts out of fear. In this, Santorum is a symbol. The dark and frothy comparison Steve makes between Santorum and D’Amato is quite accurate.

(What a surprise, Michael. You shave the beard off and you look just like Rod Gilbert. Do you still own a pair of Sassoon jeans?)

  12. How odd. Santorum’s one of those conservatitves who scream that “throwing more money at education is not the answer.” I guess the taxpayers of PA throwing $38k at Santorum’s kids’ private education isn’t the answer either.

We need to vote this creep out of office lickety-split.

Posted by mat  on  09/07  at  10:52 AM
  13. No, no, mat, it’s throwing money at public education that’s not the answer.  Requiring the public to pay the equivalent of three Princeton tuitions so that the Santorum brood can attend the madrassa of their choice is the answer.

And Chris, yes, I still have my pair of Sassoons.  But if I shave off my beard you’ll find out that I look more like Orland Kurtenbach.

Posted by  on  09/07  at  11:23 AM
  14. Chris--Who’s dumber, Santorum or Jeff Sessions of Alabama?  It’s such a tough call.

Posted by  on  09/07  at  11:48 AM
  15. Bad idea to shave off the beard. I tried it this summer, and all I did was give my kids nightmares.

  16. I think Michael’s right about Santorum. He’s perfectly willing to use a federal government program to advance his social agenda ("strengthening the family” for instance). So he’s not so much like a Grover Norquist Republican and more like a Pat Robertson one.

  17. Rick Santorum is a miserable miscreant, soulless cocksucker who can lick the sweat off of THIS proud progressive’s hairy, hairy balls. That he would even *consider* saying what he said is bad enough. But to have actually said it, as if it were self-evident, is beyond inhuman.

This man needs to be voted out of office ASAP. I wish there were a way to prevent certain people from running for public office besides having a felonious background. What Santorum said is horrifying, but having this amoral jackass anywhere near the real levers of power in this country is terrifying.

The rest of the country is counting on you Pennsylvanians to vote this fucker out of office at the earliest opportunity.

  18. Thus my new name for the Senator:
“Sanctus Santorum"..."holiest of the holies” for those not attending Catholic schools.
Hope he can’t avoid the hurricane his bloviating has started.

  19. Gee, I think it’s quite a good idea to impose tougher penalties on people for not ‘heeding warnings’ merely because they don’t have cars and all forms of public transportation have shut down and there is no repeat no provision for evacuation of people without cars or people unable to drive. We could impose huge fines on them! I mean really big. Big enough to pay for the damage they caused - I understand that’s about $150 billion now. That’ll keep them putting in the hours at Walmart for awhile! Or alternatively we could send them to Angola to chop cotton - or how about sending them out of state, to Parchman: I understand that’s even worse. Or - wait, now, this is good - we could shackle them and put them to work building the levees higher, and raising the ground level of the 80% of Nawlins that was flooded, and fixing the oil rigs, and towing the grain ships out into the Gulf of Mexico because the port is messed up.

Two birds with one stone, you get my meaning? Punish those shiftless carless bastards, and fix Nawlins for free. Well not quite free, we’d have to pay for a little food, but a little beans and rice won’t cost much. And we can make them live on the levee, just like those smart folks in Mississippi did in 1927 - because if theyda let them go, those shiftless bastards wouldn’t have got the cotton crop in. Won’t cost nothin to make them live on the levee - well maybe a few troops to shoot deserters, but that won’t cost much.

    It’s a win-win!

Good call, Ophelia!  $150 billion in fines at $5.15 per hour (if we assume that Wal-Mart isn’t paying people $3-4/hr in cash off the books any more) yields us just about 29,126,213,592 hours and 14 minutes of work.  Translated into Wal-Mart days (which, like Jupiter’s, are about ten hours long, and which, like Jupiter’s, do not involve “overtime"), and assuming a standard 51 weeks/year at 6 days/week, that’s roughly 9,518,370.5 labor years owed to Wal-Mart.  In other words, we could levy this fine against 100,000 of New Orleans’ most intransigent, immobile, or threatening residents, and Wal-Mart would find itself with free labor for the next 95 years.  The Next American Century, indeed.

For your timely and humane suggestion, Ms. Benson, you may go to the head of the GOP class.

  22. Gosh, Rob, I think you’d be better off keeping your balls as far away from Santorum as possible.  You never know what a guy like him might do.
