Emergency Appendectomy
To all of this blog’s faithful readers:
Michael had an emergency appendectomy yesterday that his wife, Janet, has described to me as “hairy.” So he’s currently in the hospital, prognosis good, but not expecting to be back up on his feet for a while.
I will be out of computer range for the next 2 plus days, but will get back on Sunday night to give you an update on Michael’s condition and continue our communal efforts to get the Democrats’ act together.
I’ll bet he wasn’t so hairy after the operation. Jah speed you to a fully recovery, Michael. We miss you.
Posted by on 05/20 at 09:32 AMJanet, Michael, get the hell out of there. Soon.
Posted by Doghouse Riley on 05/20 at 10:13 AMGet Well Soon Mike

Posted by Steven Hart on 05/20 at 11:21 AMGet well Michael.
Posted by on 05/20 at 11:39 AMHey, I had one of those appendectomies once...when I was 9. To help pass the time while I was stuck in bed, my family got me the whole set of Aurora movie monster models. It almost made me happy to have almost died from a ruptured appendix.
I recommend it. It would keep him away from the computer and the papers for at least a little while.
Posted by PZ Myers on 05/20 at 11:39 AMGet better soon—we need your good work
Posted by Jim Shirk on 05/20 at 11:48 AMSounds like Janet should have found a better hospital. Usually internal organs such as the appendix aren’t ‘hairy.’ Perhaps a second opinion would have been in order?
Posted by on 05/20 at 11:57 AMWe all missed him at the dinner in his honor last night! He should be getting a spiffy get-well card we all signed…
Posted by Elayne Riggs on 05/20 at 12:00 PMYeow. Rest up, Michael, and stay away from all D. Ho articles as well as anything deliberately funny. We don’t want the stitches coming undone.
Posted by Sherman Dorn on 05/20 at 01:16 PMMaybe the docs tried to get his End Notes along with his Appendix?
Be well soon, Michael!
Posted by George on 05/20 at 01:34 PMCan the doctors take out his conscience and sense of humor while they are at it? The National Review could use some new blood....
Get Well Soon!
Posted by Konczal on 05/20 at 01:55 PMGet well soon Michael. We’ll be here.
Posted by on 05/20 at 02:12 PMBest wishes - get well soon
Posted by Patrick ONeill on 05/20 at 02:14 PMBest wishes for a quick recovery, Michael. Hope they left your sense of humor intact.
Posted by on 05/20 at 02:21 PMMay you get back up on your hind legs very soon! And just in case Elise’s right, stay away from Republicans.
HildePosted by on 05/20 at 02:30 PMYup, happened to me at age 9, too. Had to be evacuated in a single-engine bush plane, from Chefornak, Alaska (population ca. 120) to the tiny hospital in Bethel. They allowed me nothing but jello and tea for five days post-op; I hope that regimen’s no longer prescribed, Michael.
Speedy rebounds! We look forward to your tale of this hirsute ordeal, so hang in there.
Posted by on 05/20 at 02:36 PMJeez. Now I’ll never get my margarita! And D. Ho will have all the proof he needs that those darn liberal professors will do anything to get a day off!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Michael.

GET WELL SOON!
Posted by Roxanne on 05/20 at 03:44 PMThey will tell you it takes ten days to really get past the worst of the pain each time you move the tiniest bit (for some reason they never give you enough pain killers). You won’t believe them. They will be right!. Stay down, get rest, let people really help you, and you will be fine.
For your sake i look forward to not reading you here online for a few weeks. Get well, get back in shape, and smile.
Posted by on 05/20 at 03:49 PMYour irrepressible humor and good cheer will get you and yours through this! Wishing you well.
Posted by DK on 05/20 at 04:04 PMHey, Michael, sounds like you need to stop watching right-wing cable. Take care of yourself--we look forward to having you back at full strength.

Posted by Kathy on 05/20 at 06:47 PMOh how weak the mortal frame....
Best of luck Michael and Janet and the boys.
Posted by on 05/20 at 07:47 PMNo doubt your $900k a year job pays you millions of dollars in workers comp for this appendectomy. And to think that D.Ho has to self-insure!
Get well soon, Michael! Neo-bolshevism needs you!
Posted by on 05/20 at 08:08 PMIs that the one where you get to eat all the ice cream you want?
Here’s wishing you a speedy recovery and lots of mint chip goodness.

Posted by Lee on 05/20 at 10:24 PMOuch, I had one of those few years ago, At Mt Nittany too.
I was not impressed with the ER…
Took a long time to recover. And it is very painful.

Get better soon.
Posted by on 05/21 at 12:13 AMHey Michael -
I’ve been told by medical people that once you get past the age of 40, the chances of having problems with your appendix go down like, a thousandfold. So you really beat the odds!
Why didn’t you just buy a lottery ticket instead?
(Silly Yankee fan).Sending you psychic “get well” hugs from Northern CA: the place that does them best!
Posted by on 05/21 at 12:40 AMI’m reliably informed that Prof. Berube had three times the appendectomy of David Horowitz.
Posted by Patrick Nielsen Hayden on 05/21 at 12:43 AMI’m reliably informed that Prof. Berube had three times the appendectomy of David Horowitz.
And his appendix was only taut for six hours a week!
It’s too bad you didn’t come on my hike with me last week, Michael: you could have added a thrilling Grand Canyon helicopter evac to your story. Hope you’re feeling better.
Posted by Chris Clarke on 05/21 at 12:55 AMTry not to laugh. I.E., do not read your blog, your blog comments, or the dinner menu while you recover.
Get well. We need your voice out here in the wasteland.
Posted by KathyF on 05/21 at 04:15 AMSpeedy recovery - you are missed (tho, hey, a little enforced vacation can’t hurt, tender as you may be).

Boy, I bet this really screws up your class schedule, huh?
Posted by on 05/21 at 11:56 AMAnd Corpuscle’s right! Horowitz needs to add a link on discoverthenetwork.org to Michael’s insidious appendix.
Posted by on 05/21 at 11:59 AMI will look for your appendix on eBay; rumor says that it has an unusual hockey-stick shape.
Get well quickly!

We have a child with Down syndrome, and I have read most of _Life As We Know It_ (skimmed the wrong-headed section on pro-choice politics). I appreciate your advocacy for your son and for people with disabilities. I appreciate you and your contribution, and wish you a speedy recovery.

Posted by on 05/21 at 10:40 PMNow D Ho will have irrefutable evidence that you have internalized socialism. An inlammed appendic is red, is it not?
Have as speedy and painless as you can manage. We need you to back being a pain in the Right’s right side.
Posted by handdrummer on 05/21 at 11:34 PMand why is this entire episode not being live-blogged? someone at The O’Berube O’Factor really needs be dressed down for this missed opportunity. this is ratings gold; instead you lay there hemorrhaging some serious blogshare. i just hope to god that when you regain your senses youll remember to milk the recovery for all its worth. it wont be as sexy as the blood and guts stuff but (redacted) it still plays well in peoria.
Posted by on 05/22 at 11:07 AMJello and broth for a week, yum! Get well quick, Michael.
Posted by on 05/22 at 01:14 PMGet well soon, Michael.
Posted by on 05/22 at 01:34 PMI had mine out around 9 or 10 also. Don’t remember a whole lot about it - the kid in the bed next to me was way sicker, and I got out of school (score!).

Hope you’re feeling better soon!
