Fun time

I’ve been travelling all day-- no, that’s not the fun part.  Although my drive to Harrisburg had a good deal of humor potential:  had to rent a Penn State vehicle because one of our cars is in trouble (and of course Janet and Jamie need the other one), but there were no Penn State cars left, so they told me they would give me a minivan (cue the line from Get Shorty here-- it’s the Cadillac of minivans!), except that the minivan was not a minivan but rather a serious maxivan, which meant that I went careening through the Alleghenies in a big empty boxlike thing.  Then, one hour from State College, discovered to my dismay that an entire section of US 322 was closed.  Cursing and weaving my way through oncoming traffic on side roads the rest of the way (I can explain, officer), I pulled into the parking garage and made my train in Harrisburg with 30 seconds to spare.  Which probably means that if I hadn’t run all the way from the garage to the platform (and you know what that looks like when you’re toting a garment bag, a laptop suitcase, and a gym bag), I would’ve missed the damn thing altogether.

So while I’m occupied with immediate tasks, I thought I’d direct you over to this diverting site, where you can have fun replacing Supreme Court justices with Scalia clones.  I suggest you do what I did-- get rid of (in order) Stevens, Rehnquist, O’Connor, Ginsburg, and then (just for good measure) Kennedy, Souter, and Breyer-- and see what happens!  Fun for the whole family!

Back tomorrow.

  1. Glad you made the train. Around here they still talk about my one experience with a university vehicle. It too was a van—a fifteen seater. Careening is the only way to go, isn’t it?  Anyway, I had to slam on the brakes at a train crossing. The van tool box was not properly tied down. It flew past my head and through the front windshield at about forty miles an hour, bounced off the hood and under the passing train where it was, well, flattened.

As I walk across campus and see someone pointing at me and laughing, I know it’s not paranoia.

  2. Wow, now that’s a story.  Good thing the tool box wasn’t behind the driver’s seat, now.

And on other matters, I’d be happy to hire you as my hockey agent, but I assure you that I am not in fact carrying my team.  I place myself fourth or fifth on the depth chart for forwards (we have either nine or ten, six or seven of whom show up regularly).

  3. Honesty will get you nowhere in this game, Michael. Where was Ron Duguay on anyone’s depth chart? We’ll put you in some tight Sassoon jeans and management will crumble. Work on the maniacal laugh.

  4. Ron Duguay?  He was drafted in the first round, Chris.  And yet only had one 40-goal season.  My role model, when I was a kid, was Rod Gilbert, whom I met many times at his summer hockey camp on Long Island in the early 1970s (really!  and he signed my copy of Goal!, his autobiography!).  But these days I think of myself more as a kind of Cory Stillman-- you know, the role player who’s also a bellwether:  if Cory’s scoring 20, you know his team-- Flames, Blues, Lightning-- must be doing well.

And he looks like shit in Sassoon jeans.

  12. Hello guys!

Its very pleasure to read the article and moreover,I got a used tool box with no keys. I haven’t found a way to contact the company because the website doesn’t have a “contact us” section. I have the original receipt and serial number if that helps.
