Lieberman aide John Droney: Bad Jews!
The JTA news service reports that Ned Lamont beating Joe Lieberman among Jewish voters in Connecticuit:
But an internal Democratic poll of Connecticut Jews sees Lamont leading by 50 percent to 41 percent, JTA has learned. The sample was small, but the results were a dramatic departure from the 90-plus approval rating Lieberman scored among Jews after Al Gore named him as his running mate in 2000. [JTA]
The same article quotes one of Lieberman’s top advisors castigating the Jewish community for preferring Lamont:
“I find the behavior of a large segment of the Jewish community to be reprehensible and outrageous,” said John Droney, a former chairman of the state party who is advising Lieberman to run as an independent. “When he’s in trouble like this, they all ought to rally to him. It’s too bad that you have to listen to an Irish-American to realize that you’ve got to support your own home cooking.” [JTA]
Lovely. Not only does Holy Joe feel that he’s entitled to his Senate seat for life, his right hand man feels that he’s entitled to the support of Connecticut’s Jews.

Yeah, I agree. It’s “reprehensible and outrageous” that anyone should support the democratic primary process. Once elected, a person is entitled to that seat for as long as they damn well want it. A primary challenge is simply un-American. Supporting Ned Lamont, or wishing to hear an honest debate of the issues is not only reckless, but dangerous. Jews especially should understand this.
Posted by on 07/07 at 05:41 PMAs a connecticut resident, I will be assuredly voting for Ned Lamont in the upcoming Democratic primary. The only thing that worries me is that if Lieberman were to run as an independent, the vote could be horribly split between Lamont and Lieberman, leaving room for that old Republican party to step in…
Although this is Connecticut, and I doubt we’ll field a redder senator than Mr. Lieberman anytime soon. I can’t imagine enough people voting Republican for that to really be a problem, but it’s still a scary thought floating around in the back of my mind.
Posted by Bryan McKay on 07/07 at 06:33 PMThe polling numbers I’ve seen suggest that Lieberman as an independent would capture more votes from the poor, unknown Republican candidate than from LaMont. There’s a fairly large “anybody but Lieberman” contingent that’s plenty happy to have a viable alternative in LaMont. And the Democratic establishment, at least now, is saying that they’ll go along with the results of the primary.
I’m not sure how much to make of this, but, for the first time in the 18 years I’ve lived in Connecticut, there’s been lively lunch-time conversation about a Senate race. If there was anyone supporting Lieberman, they weren’t speaking up! One colleague overheard us talking about Lieberman and chimed in with “that weasel”.

Posted by alice on 07/07 at 07:15 PMWTF? So what would his argument be, if Lamont were Jewish too?
Posted by bellatrys on 07/08 at 08:10 AMWhen Paul Wellstone ran against Rudy Boschwitz in Minnestota in his first Senate run, Boschwitz circulated a letter in the Jewish community that Wellstone wasn’t as Jewish as Boschwitz or “not Jewish enough” or somesuch nonsense. This didn’t sit well with anyone, Jewish or Gentile.
Posted by on 07/08 at 03:10 PMA weasel. Yes, that’s just what he is.
Posted by Hattie on 07/09 at 12:47 AMDroney went on to add, “Why the hell can’t these people be clannish and conspiratorial when you want them to? Don’t their elders have some sort of protocol about this sort of thing?”
Posted by Baruch Grazer on 07/09 at 03:51 PMI’m sorry, I didn’t see anything there that would support the contention that Joe Lieberman thinks he is entitled to a Senate seat for life.
But I suppose when you’re Right (TM) silly things like Joe Lieberman simply thinking he’s the better candidate aren’t relevant; the point is “Holy Joe” has dissented from progressive dogma on a single issue and must be purged.
If only we still tarred and feathered people, then at least this whole thing could produce a few good photographs for the history books. I think Markos dumping a barrel of tar over Joe’s head with that weird grin on his face could beat out Che as the most-worshipped image of the modern age.

Nice astroturf you’ve got there. Tell me are the french fries any good at the AEI cafeteria.
Here’s an idea, why don’t you go crawl back to the side of Karl Rove, where you’re most confortable you flying right wing monkey.
Because only a flying right wing monkey would look at the facts of this primary and make statements like: “the point is “Holy Joe” has dissented from progressive dogma on a single issue and must be purged.”Your BS is transparent and laughable.
You seem to have a real problem with Democracy.
