On impending indictments

Regular readers of this bashful blog may be wondering why I haven’t said anything about Valerie Plame or Judith Miller or Karl Rove or Scooter Libby or Count Novakula, King of the Undead.  Well, that’s because this diffident blog doesn’t do much in the way of Beltway speculatin’.  It’s learned from bitter experience that it’s not very good at speculatin’ and prognosticatin’, and it doesn’t like doing things it’s not very good at, especially in public.  So I’m just sitting around in blogspace, waiting to see what Patrick Fitzgerald has in store for everyone.  I’m hoping it’ll be broad and sweeping and utterly devastating.  After all, the issue at hand does involve national security, nuclear proliferation, and the central rationale for war in Iraq—all of which are regarded by many people as being even more important than oral sex.  Now, if only there were some way we could tie all of this to Richard Perle as well!  That would be very pleasant.

I just want to add that I went to high school with Patrick Fitzgerald.  Regis H.S., New York City, Class of 1978.  Graduating class of about 105.  I didn’t know him well, but still, I’m sitting around in blogspace cheering him on.

Go Pat.

  1. You went to Regis? Fitzgerald went to Regis? Interesting. I fell in with a bunch of Regis grads in college in the late 80s (this was at Vassar), and I must say, in my experience no high school ever put out grads that were a better advertisement. Actually the ones I got to know were actually in different circles, which made their ability to stand out all the more impressive. Then again I think I just dig the Jesuitical mindset, so I’m just plain biased.

  2. I think Regis was an incredibly intellectually rigorous place.  One of these centuries, though, they really ought to admit women.  Just my opinion.

  3. I proclaim an official moratorium on using “Richard Pearle” and “oral sex” in the same paragraph. You may, however, use “Jesuitical mindset” and “oral sex” as much as you please.

  4. Also, “Richard Perle” and “oral sex.”

  5. I have a prediction to make in your stead:

There will be 43 indictments of 16 people including Dick Cheney. Not one of them will be for oral sex. And now I’ll have to wait for another comment thread to post a prediction about Richard Perle.

    oops.

  6. Ah, Regis High School. East 84th.  Taking the entrance exam on a Saturday morning.  Years of latin and a love of language. A wonderful place so long as you could avoid jug.

  7. Oh, I forgot to mention. Phil Goyette and Vic Hadfield said to say hello.

  8. Not so much off-topic as auf-topic, but Regis HS in Denver now admits girls (after an addition was built to accomodate the ‘special needs’ of the fairer sex.) Oh yeah, and my wife teaches at Regis University in Denver.

Jesuits don’t rule. But really, shouldn’t they?

  9. And here I assumed you didn’t have anything to say about Plame because you were getting the good stuff on deep background.

  10. For an excellent update on the scandal and its rightwing spin machine so far, may I recommend Liberal Oasis (10/13/05 post), which Michael wisely has on his blogroll. But here’s a handy link too, if I’ve done it right:

Give ‘em hell, Fitzy! You’re doin’ a heck of a job!

  11. Regis HS?  Well, I went to Kathie Lee HS.  Made a lot of cheap merchandise in shop class.

  12. Kathie Lee HS was a serious school—I never thought they should have changed their name to Kelly HS, myself.

As to whether Jesuits should rule, The Dad:  no, they shouldn’t.  You know, they’re always scheming about how to get the Stuarts back on the throne, and that’s just annoying.  But they make the absolutely best éminences grises in the world.

  13. Berube and Fitzgerald. Surely your yearbook pictures were on the same spread, if not the same page. Worth posting?

  14. My bother’s very brainy 8th. grade classmate attended Regis in ‘62.  He said that he had 6 hours of homework every evening.  I shuddered but was relieved to realize that there was no way I’d ever be accepted.  So, no Jesuits.  The ICBs would have to do.  Hey, Latin is Latin.

  15. Oh, don’t worry.  Fitz has a thing for Perle too.

by the way, I’m the one on the anon posters day that wondered about your time to do all the hockey/scholarship/drums, etc.
.  Have a new baby son as of two days ago, so I get to find out now.

  16. I too went to Regis (Class of ‘66) and as the father of one child, a daughter turning 12, I have been trying to get the school’s Board to consider admitting girls to no avail. Some things will never change. But Fitzgerald makes me proud to be a Regian, and I’ll be even prouder when he indicts Bush’s “brain” any day now.

  17. Remember the good old days when political indictments were all about oral sex?

Posted by  on  10/16  at  08:57 PM
  18. If it took him 6 hours to do his homework, he probably didn’t survive Regis.  As I recall, the faculty aimed at 2 - 3 hours, to keep idle hands out of the Devil’s workshop, no doubt.  Toward that end, we had something like 30 lines of Greek (Xenophon or Homer) and 50 lines of Latin (Vergil, etc.) a night.
