Is this guy kidding or what?

I believe I have a short essay coming out in this Sunday’s New York Times Magazine--you know, the kind of piece that makes a certain kind of person write to me and say, “this is outrageous!  it is an affront to all right-thinking people!  furthermore, it is utterly preposterous!  sir!  are you kidding, or what?” (To that question I usually reply that I’m kidding and what-- it’s really not an either/or kind of thing.)

Anyway, just a heads up.  If on Sunday morning you feel like writing me one of those letters, don’t bother-- since, as you see, I’ve already done the job for you.

UPDATE (Saturday):  Apparently the essay is out, and I’ve already gotten an email-- a very kind one, from a former student, too.  Most pleasant.
