Oh, and one more thing . . .
People are buzzing about the strange way in which Bush announced the resignation of George Tenet yesterday-- wrapping up a little Rose Garden thing with John Howard, leaving for Andrews Air Force Base, then coming back a few minutes later to say, oh yes, almost forgot, Tenet’s leaving, personal reasons, you know, great man, strong, resolute, will miss him, goodbye.
But isn’t it clear what Bush was doing? This is the old Peter-Falk-as-Columbo routine, pretending to leave, then stopping, holding your hand to your forehead and saying, “there’s just one thing I don’t understand. . . .”
As for what this all means, I defer to the fine executive summary (so to speak) provided by Josh Marshall:
beside the possibility that the White House’s favored Iraqi exile was an Iranian agent, that the spy chief just got canned, that the OSD is wired to polygraphs, and that the president has had to retain outside counsel in the investigation into which members of his staff burned one of the country’s own spies, I’d say the place is being run like a pretty well-oiled machine.
But we always knew the Bush-Cheney team was well-oiled, now, didn’t we.
